The Vavengers Patron Baroness Boycott raises the question on inequalities facing survivors of FGM within the NHS

Milestone moment for our One Question Campaign! ✊📣

Today there was a discussion at the UK House of Lords on #FGM and our Patron Baroness Rosie Boycott raised a key point from our ‘One Question Campaign’ which is on our ask for holistic healthcare for survivors who may need reconstructive surgery. This surgery could relieve survivors who need the surgery from physical injury trauma effects, nerve damage and psychosexual trauma. Yet this surgery isn’t being offered on the NHS and on the other hand Labiaplasty which is a medicalised FGM being offered within our NHS.

Over ten countries in Europe offer vulva reconstructive surgery covered by their healthcare system to survivors who need this medical intervention to improve their quality of life. UK must follow positive examples such as France and Germany where holistic healthcare for survivors is on offer under national healthcare systems.

It’s also unclear why NHS will offer medicalised FGM to women in the UK and these will now be looked into in a formal inquiry as a follow-up on our Patron Rosie’s question on this matter.
