The Vavengers convene global partners during UN CSW69
The Vavengers, with the support of key partners WilmerHale, King & Spalding, AWRA, The Girl Generation, The George Washington University and Wallace Global Fund, convene global partners during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 69th Beijing+30 session.
During the CSW69 / Beijing+30, the global community got together to mark the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995). The CSW69th session brought together representatives of UN Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organisations (NGOS) from all regions of the world. During these two weeks of high-profile global convening, The Vavengers, with partners, hosted two key events in New York and Washington DC and welcomed activists, organisations and government representatives from around the world to a safe campaigning space where our upcoming global report was talked about.
The report focuses on health and legal disparities facing survivors of FGM across the globe, examining each country closely, creating a map for funders, activists, NGOS and governments to utilise in the work of ending Female Genital Mutilation.
The headlines from the global report was shared on panels in New York and Washington DC by speakers including our CEO Sema Gornall, Patron Sir Max Hill KC, Trustees Naimah Hassan and Milosz Palej, Advisory Board Member Dr Leyla Hussein OBE, AWRA Co-founder MamLisa Camara, Senior Advisor to Wallace Global Fund Susan Gibbs, Associate Professor at George Washington University Karen McDonnell. We also heard special remarks from AWRA Co-founder Domtila Chesang, The Girl Generation Team Lead Jacinta Muteshi-Strachan, Marleen Krueger Partner at WilmerHale and Josh Toll Partner at King & Spalding.
These important convenings created an opportunity for global partners to get together on this report, and now we will work together with key partners to build the advocacy & messaging of the report from now until the UN General Assembly's 80th anniversary. We look forward to releasing the full report, which is expected to be the first of its kind, reaching nearly 500 pages, closely monitoring each country on their stance on FGM.
