A win for The Gambia and the world!

Following months of tireless campaigning by communities, activists and organisations, The Gambian government voted on Monday to uphold the ban on FGM/C. 💥

34 out of 53 lawmakers voted to uphold the ban. That is a comfortable majority, but still leaves 19 decision-makers that believe Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting should exist. As always we still have more work to do to remind the world that nobody is free until all women are free from violence...

Alongside our global allies, we found this debate disturbing and as an attack on women’s rights and we do not want girl children’s safety to be at risk ever again. With our campaigning work alongside survivors and all the organisations working to end FGM/C, we will continue doing our important work until FGM/C is illegal in every country and that this form of abuse no longer happens.

Campaigning for the rights of women and girls must continue, until every girl child is free of abuse. Let's celebrate this exceptional demonstration of the power of activism and campaigning!
